How to run a product drop.

A drop is a limited batch that goes on sale at a set time. It turns a quiet product launch into an event your followers plan around. Here is how small makers and brands run one, from the first teaser to the sold-out post.

Why drops work

A fixed time and a limited count give people a reason to buy now instead of “later,” which usually means never. Followers who missed the last drop set an alarm for the next one.

Drops also suit how small makers work. You make a batch, sell the batch, and make the next one. No inventory sits around, and every drop is a chance to try something new.

Pick the product and the number

Choose something with a clear story: a new colorway, a seasonal flavor, a collaboration, a restock of a favorite. The story is what you post about for a week.

Then pick a number you can actually make and ship. Selling out is the goal, so err on the low side. A 40-piece drop that sells out in an hour does more for the next one than a 100-piece drop that lingers for a week.

Set the date and time

Pick a time when your followers are online: an evening around 7 or 8 pm in your time zone, or a weekend morning, is common. Check your account insights for when your audience is most active.

Announce it at least a week ahead, and say the exact time and time zone every time: “Friday 7 pm Eastern.” Avoid holidays and big local events unless the drop is tied to one.

Build up to it

Post the story in pieces: the sketch or the first test, the making, a close-up, the final photo, the price and count. Use Stories for behind-the-scenes and a countdown sticker so followers get a reminder.

A waitlist turns interest into buyers. Ask people to comment, DM, or sign up by text or email for a link at drop time. Send the link to them a few minutes early as a thank-you.

Set up the shop before the day

Put the product in your shop with photos, sizes or colors, prices and the exact stock count for each. Keep it hidden until drop time, and test a purchase yourself first.

Stock counts are what make a drop fair. If two people tap buy on the last one, only one should get it. SnapCart holds stock the moment checkout starts and takes Apple Pay, cards and Venmo, so a sold-out size stays sold out and nobody pays for something that is gone.

Decide shipping and pickup ahead of time and put it in the listing: flat-rate shipping, free local pickup, or both.

Drop day

Go live on time. Post the link in your bio, in a Story with a link sticker, and to the waitlist. Pin a post that says it is live.

Stay online for the first hour to answer questions. Post updates as sizes sell out; “only 6 left in medium” is honest and it moves the rest. When it is gone, mark it sold out right away so nobody is disappointed at checkout.

After the drop

Ship fast and post the packing. Unboxing photos from buyers are the best advertising for the next drop, so ask for them and share them.

Look at the numbers: how fast it sold, which sizes went first, how many came from the waitlist. Sold out in ten minutes means the next one can be bigger or priced higher. Leftovers mean smaller or different.

Thank the people who missed out and tell them when the next one is. They are the start of your next waitlist.

Drops at a market table

Drops work in person too. Announce a new item for Saturday’s market at 9 am, bring a limited batch, and put the QR on the table so shoppers in line can buy from their phones. The stock count updates live, so the sign and the shop never disagree.

Questions

How do I do a product drop on Instagram?
Announce a date and time a week ahead, post the making, collect a waitlist, then post your shop link in your bio and Stories at drop time. Keep stock counts in the shop so it can’t oversell.
How many items should a drop have?
Fewer than you think. Pick a number you can make and ship and expect to sell out. Selling out fast builds demand for the next drop.
Can I take preorders instead of a drop?
Yes. A preorder takes orders first and makes after, which suits made-to-order work. See our preorders page for how to run one.
