How the math works
Cost = materials + labor + overhead, where labor is your minutes times your hourly rate and overhead is a percentage of the two that covers booth fees, tools and supplies you don’t count per item.
Wholesale is cost times the wholesale markup (2× is the usual rule) and retail is wholesale times 2. Rounded is the retail price rounded up to the nearest dollar, since round prices are easier to sign and pay.
The last line shows what you keep from a card sale at the retail price after a typical 2.9% + 30¢ processing fee. Payments by Venmo business profiles and PayPal cost about the same; cash costs nothing.
When to break the rule
Large pieces with many hours can land at a retail price nobody at a fair will pay. Those often sell at 1.5× to 2× cost instead. Small, quick items can go above 4×. The point is to know your break-even, then choose on purpose.
